From Tearfund on 15 January:

"You will have heard about the terrible disaster as it is unfolding on the news in Haiti. Unfortunately, even the media aren't able to portray the severity of the damage caused by the earthquake.

"Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and millions of people live in the affected area. Many buildings have been destroyed or badly damaged in the capital Port-au-Prince, including the presidential palace and the five-storey UN offices. The death toll, currently in the hundreds, is expected to rise significantly. Many more people are without shelter and basic facilities. Tearfund has already sent emergency funds, and is sending disaster specialists to help our partners assess immediate needs, including emergency shelter, clean water and sanitation, nutrition and health care.

"Tearfund really appreciates your past support and I would like to appeal to St Andrew's to please help Tearfund raise as much money as we can to support the rescue operations and to pray. Our priority at the moment is to raise money for water, food and shelter. There will obviously be continued work that needs to be done with clean up and rebuilding people's lives and homes.

Please pray:
• For all those affected by this devastating disaster.
• For Jean-Claude Cerin, Country Rep for Haiti, and also for the needs assessment team travelling out to Haiti on Friday 15th Jan; Mark and Sophie Butler, Sarah Dellor and Murray Burt.
• For safety both physically and emotionally and to maintain good health.
• For all their communication needs with local partners, media, other NGO’s, and the team here in the UK
• To be an effective aid to our partners in Haiti and to Jean Claude.
• That they work well as a team and with local partners to identify the right opportunities for Tearfund to respond to, such as locations to work in.
• To develop good relationships with donor organisations and other networks.
• For an outpouring of God's love into this broken situation.
